The SME Growth Reality Series: Practical Growth Advice for Irish SMEs
Why Elevare Founder Karagh Kelly is sharing the realities of growing an SME — one practical insight at a time.
Running and growing an SME can look very different from the outside. From the outside, it can look like growth is simply a matter of winning more customers, increasing sales and investing more in marketing.
In reality, it's rarely that straightforward.
Business owners are managing customers, teams, operations, cash flow, sales, suppliers and everything else that comes with running a business, often while trying to find time to think about what comes next.
And that's exactly where the SME Growth Reality Series came from.
Practical advice, not marketing theory
Created and delivered by Elevare Founder Karagh Kelly, the SME Growth Reality Series is a weekly LinkedIn series focused on the real challenges facing growing businesses.
The idea is simple: Cut through the marketing noise and talk about what actually happens when you're trying to grow a business.
Each week, Karagh explores a different aspect of SME growth, from generating new customers and building a consistent marketing presence to sales, LinkedIn, business development and making better use of limited resources.
The series isn't designed to provide a one-size-fits-all formula for growth. Instead, it asks better questions.
Are you working on the business or in it?
One of the recurring themes of the series is the challenge of finding time to work on growth when you're busy delivering the business. Marketing can be one of the first things to slip. So can business development. So can planning for the next stage of growth. The business is busy, customers need attention and the immediate priorities take over. Before long, the marketing activity that was supposed to generate the next wave of customers has been pushed down the list.
Karagh sees this regularly through her work with clients in Ireland and further afield.
“A lot of businesses don't necessarily lack ideas. They lack the time and resources to consistently turn those ideas into action.”
That's an important distinction. Sometimes the answer isn't another strategy document. It's having someone who can help turn the strategy into consistent activity.
Growth isn't just about marketing
Another key message running through the series is that marketing doesn't operate in isolation. Generating more leads doesn't help if they're not followed up. More LinkedIn followers don't necessarily mean more customers. A new website won't fix an unclear proposition. And increasing your marketing budget won't automatically create growth if you don't know what you're trying to achieve.
For Karagh, effective growth comes from looking at the bigger picture.
Who are you trying to reach?
What do you want them to know about you?
How are you creating opportunities?
What happens when someone enquires?
And who is responsible for making sure it all happens?
These are the practical questions that sit behind the weekly posts.
Why LinkedIn?
The series is deliberately being delivered through Karagh's personal LinkedIn profile. That's because SME growth is ultimately about people and relationships. Business owners want to hear from people who understand the challenges they're facing, not simply from another company trying to sell them something. The personal profile gives Karagh the opportunity to share her own observations, experiences and perspectives from working with Irish and international businesses across a range of sectors.
It also creates space for conversation. The aim isn't to broadcast. It's to ask questions, share ideas and encourage other business owners to contribute their experiences.
Cross sectoral insights
Although the principles explored in the SME Growth Reality Series apply across sectors, many of Elevare's clients operate in technically complex B2B industries. That includes areas such as MedTech, Medical Devices, Engineering, Manufacturing, Technology and more.
These businesses often have exceptional technical expertise. The challenge can be communicating that expertise in a way that reaches the right customers and creates commercial opportunities. That's where strategic marketing and consistent execution can make a real difference.
What does the series mean for Elevare?
The SME Growth Reality Series is ultimately an extension of how Elevare works with its clients. Elevare isn't about marketing for the sake of marketing. It's about helping businesses understand what they need to do to grow and then helping them actually do it. That's the premise behind Elevare.
We believe strategy is important, but strategy sitting in a document isn't going to grow your business.
Things need to get done. That's why we don't believe in holding businesses in a strategy phase for six or eight weeks before anything happens. We work dynamically. We establish the direction, identify the priorities and then start putting things into action. As we learn what is working, what isn't and where new opportunities are emerging, the strategy evolves with the business.
Plan. Do. Learn. Adapt. Keep moving.
That's how we work.
Whether that means creating content, managing social media, developing campaigns, building a stronger LinkedIn presence, supporting lead generation, promoting a new service or helping you make better marketing or resource decisions, our focus is on turning ideas into action. Because the best strategy in the world is worthless if nobody actually does it. Strategy is important. Getting things done is what creates growth.
Or it might simply mean giving a busy business owner the additional marketing resource they need to keep things moving.
The common thread is practical support focused on business growth.
